Gender & Philosophy

Course Description

This course examines how issues of gender have entered into discussions within the major fields of philosophy. Topics may include: ethics, theory of knowledge, philosophy of science, philosophy of religion, and social and political philosophy.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will...

1. Become familiar with major feminist philosophical themes, problems, and the methods of dealing with them;

2. Be introduced to important classical and contemporary philosophers and how they have viewed and framed the debate around gender in philosophy;

3. Learn how to read and interpret philosophical texts;

4. Acquire an initial command of philosophical language with regard to gender and feminist studies;

5. Demonstrate what it means to adopt a "philosophical attitude"; and

6. Learn what philosophy is and the ways in which it is relevant to one’s personal and professional life.
