This course introduces students to the major themes of social and political philosophy, including justice, forms of government, revolution, liberty, equality, and civil disobedience. Sample topics include: What is a just distribution of income? What is the best form of government? Should there be limits to free speech? Is one ever justified in disobeying the law?
By the end of this course, students will be able to...
1. Demonstrate command of important philosophical terminology, themes, and arguments concerning the establishment and justification of societies.
2. State and evaluate non-trivial theories and arguments from various sources related to social and political philosophy.
3. Identify just relationships amongst and between members and societies.
